About ACHMM The Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers, Inc. (ACHMM) is a professional association with a membership of more than 4,000 of the nation’s leading experts in environmental, health and safety management. ACHMM is the only national organization devoted to the professional advancement of the field. Our members are distributed across 69 chapters in 37 states plus the District of Columbia. In 2006, ACHMM established its first international chapter in Bangalore, India. ACHMM is headquartered at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) campus in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington D.C. ACHMM envisions a world where the natural environment is unburdened by pollution; workers are exposed only to healthy and safe conditions; and hazardous materials are used and transported safely and efficiently. As it has for more than two decades, ACHMM works to advance the field of hazardous materials management to make its vision a reality. Its core purpose is to foster a community of professionals and to jointly advocate for the public recognition of the value of the Certified Hazardous Material Manager® (CHMM®) credential, the standards it represents and the professionals who uphold it. Our Vision: ACHMM’s vision is to be the recognized leader and resource for those practicing Environmental, Health and Safety Management. Our Mission: ACHMM’s mission is to promote the environmental, health and safety profession; offer professional development and networking opportunities; and to provide value to our membership. Our Strategy: To achieve its mission, ACHMM will work with its chapters, the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) and other professional organizations to link industry, government and academia, establishing its vision for the future. ACHMM History The 1970s and 1980s saw a proliferation of environmental, safety and health laws and the rapid expansion of the hazardous materials management profession. Given these circumstance, the non-profit credentialing organization Institute for Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) recognized a need for trained and credentialed professionals to be at the forefront of developing strategies and standard practices for properly handling hazardous materials to protect the public and the environment. And thus, the IHMM established the CHMM® certification program in 1984. A hazardous materials professional’s CHMM® credential signifies to government, employers and the public that he or she is uniquely qualified to properly manage hazardous materials to safeguard the environment and to protect public health, safety and welfare. In 1995, ACHMM was incorporated as an independent 501c3 nonprofit membership organization. Today, through an affiliation agreement, ACHMM and IHMM work together to guarantee the success of individual CHMMs and the CHMM® program.
